Out-of-District Courses

Overview

  • Definition of Credit: One semester period of credit typically requires 40–60 minutes of instruction per week for 17 weeks (or 12 clock hours).

  • Outside Courses: Students may take up to four out-of-district, UC-approved courses during high school. These require pre-approval from the principal/designee and do not receive extra grade weighting (AP/Honors).

  • Online & Correspondence: Credit is available for courses from the University of California or other accredited institutions, provided they meet A-G requirements and follow the pre-approval process.

  • Summer School: Private summer school courses must be UC-approved or aligned with California standards and include at least 120 instructional hours.

Eligibility for Outside Credits

Out-of-district courses are typically approved for:

  • Electives or foreign languages not offered at the school.

  • Credit recovery for grades of D+ or lower.

  • Course acceleration or resolving scheduling conflicts.
